"I more than anyone questioned whether selling books door to door was really going to give me an 'edge' over my fellow college classmates.  I can definitively say that what I learned while selling books not only helped me gain an edge over many of my fellow classmates and secure a job in the most difficult job market since the Great Depression, but also prepared me to succeed and excel in life after college."

"I would recommend the Southwestern internship to anyone who wants to learn skills that will help them live a more fulfilling and meaningful life.  Skills not found in textbook, but rather fostered through hard work, discipline and perseverance."

Ryan Bennett - Deloitte & Touche
Certified Public Accountant | SW Summers 2000-2003
University of North Dakota

"As you already know, I worked in the Southwestern summer program for four summers."  "I had the opportunity to travel to four different places (Findlay, OH, Columbus, OH, Durham, NC, and Howell, MI) and live in each for an entire summer & successfully run a business that allowed me to make almost $90,000 during college.  With that money I was able to graduate from the University of North Dakota in December 2002 debt free with much of that invested in life savings!  And after I completed my final summer on the "bookfield" I purchased the house mentioned above before I even started my professional career."

"The financial opportunity that Southwestern provided me is the easiest way to measure the success I had with Southwestern, but far from the reasons that I am writing this letter today.  Most of the things that were gained with Southwestern are things that I would refer to as intangible skills."  ..."I think the reason that quitting has never been an option for me is because Southwestern taught me how to think big & think long term."

Melissa Mills - Google, Inc

"...I believe the best lessons are learned through true life experiences, and I could not have understood them any better than through Southwestern.  I do not know of any program that would have provided me the opportunity to visit almost 2,000 people, give 1,700 presentations and personally sell $70,000 worth of product in nine weeks.  Being able to persevere successfully through challenges such as these proved my reputable character to my interviewers, which help me achieve my dream job with Google."

"The vast and very diverse “problem solving” situations one faces in even one summer of selling books empowers them with wisdom that commonly takes decades to acquire.  The truth is, I rarely using any of my business school education in my career, whereas, I use my bookfield knowledge on a daily level.  Whether it be public speaking skills, problem solving in situations where there may not be a clear answer, working collaboratively with team members who are immensely different than me, or even something as simple as maintaining a P&L record for my business group - these are daily occurrences where I draw upon my bookfield experience."

Erin Oranen - Nike, Inc.

"As a Research Recruiter for Nike, I have had a full view of just how difficult it is to find a quality job in today's market.  While other college graduates were having difficulty attaining any entry-level position at Nike, I was able to compete with candidates much older who had had many more years of experience than I.

"I would recommend the Southwestern Company to anyone who gets excited about education, travel, personal growth, lasting relationships and most of all, those who ant to set themselves apart in preparation for the future.

"As a rookie teacher last year, I was awarded the 'Rookie Teacher of the Year Award' for the entire Millard Public Schools district.  I didn't know that the award existed and so it was not a goal of mine.  I did have one goal last year and that was to make each day the best day I could make it.  I didn't develop the habit last year as a teacher; I developed the habit of doing my best every single day selling books.  Habits take time to form and I don't believe that I would have the habits I have today or won that award if it wasn't for my experience selling books."

"I learned from selling books that enthusiasm is contagious.  I have seen that in my classroom too.  How I relate to kids, parents, and other staff members I learned by all the interactions I had on the bookfield."

Rory Hughes - DePaul University - Barat Campus

"Most alumni letters speak of transferable bookfield skills such as organization, communication, goal-setting, relationship building, etc.  No doubt these skills are important.  However, being a bookman taught me, above all, that anything is possible.  If I can walk out of a stranger's house after fifteen minutes with a three hundred dollar check, I can do anything career and otherwise:  Write a novel; visit all seven continents; shoot par; help a friend out of poverty; earn a doctorate degree.  Without those two summers selling books I would not have such an outlook"

"As an academic advisor at the largest catholic university in the country, I work with college students all day.  In each of them I see two common traits:  fear and potential.  If they all were to spend one summer on the bookfield, they could tackle their greatest fears and reach their fullest potential."

"I have been nominated on several occasions to Teacher of the Year status, and finally I was honored for the 1999-2000 school year as my school's Teacher of the Year.  Of course, in the process I had to acknowledge the influence of The Southwestern Company in the development of my teaching style, methodology, and more importantly my attitude.  The life-long skills of making new acquaintances, listening to their needs, providing a service, and managing all the details that make up a thriving business, as it was with the Southwestern experience, contributed to the same success I have enjoyed with teaching."

"In the six years that I spent with the company, I not only managed to pay for all five years of university, but was also able to save enough money to travel, save, and get myself and my parents some of the things I've always wanted to get.  As a matter of fact, I made more money in three months my fourth, fifth and sixth summers than I did my first two years teaching!"

"I've come to realize that teaching, like selling, is a transference of ideas and enthusiasm.  The knowledge I have means nothing to the kids unless I can get down to their level and communicate the information in a way that makes sense to them!  Selling the importance of my subject to them in their lives is something I do every day as a teacher."

Kevin Ross - RBC Product Development

"I believe my Southwestern experience was the sole reason I got the job I did, as my engineering grades were less than spectacular!  I now work with arguably one of the best contract medical product development firms in the country, and definitely the best in Kansas City.  ...A year after I was hired, my hiring manager told me that the reason I was offered a job came down to two things, 1) my persistence, and 2) because he had friends who sold for Southwestern years earlier when he attended school at Iowa State University.  He knew the kind of character that Southwestern molded people around."

"What is even more surprising is the fact that, in addition to having landing my 'dream' engineering job, I also have been allowed to help guide the company's marketing strategies (I sit in on meetings with our CEO and director of marketing, even though I'm only a half year out of school!)

Fitz O'Donnell, EIT - Traylor Bros., Inc.

"I am currently working as an engineer for Traylor Brothers, Inc., a large marine and bridge construction company."... "We are building a new $110 million cable -stayed bridge over the Mississippi River."

"Although, the common theory is that you have to have 'relevant experience' to get a good job, of all the companies I interviewed with not one thought that my two summers on the bookfield were less than impressive."

Peleg Bartfeld - Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management Ltd.
Associate Analyst | SW Summer 2006

"As it stands currently, I am engaged in a very specialized career path as an equity analyst in an investment management firm. My job requires an analytical and quantitative acumen which at no point begins to resemble a sales or marketing role. However, I can still look back with confidence and say that selling books was unequivocally beneficial to getting me to where I am, and improving my effectiveness in the workplace. The reason behind this was first relayed to me when I joined Southwestern, “Every job is sales job, and sales is the most desired skill sought by any and every employer”. Initially I was skeptical, but when I finished my first summer I began to understand the point. Sales extends well beyond the skills associated with selling a product; sales is about a paradigm for being able to effectively engage people. If the job you desire involves being around co-workers, bosses, subordinates, suppliers, competitors or clients, an ineffective selling and communications framework will definitively limit your success."

Matt Rose - Salomon Smith Barney
Financial Consultant | SW Summers 1994-1998
University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Matt Rose is currently a financial consultant at Smith Barney.Click Here to Read More

"Because of Southwestern I was able to begin my career as a financial consultant with Salomon Smith Barney at the age of 23 when the average age of those getting started was over 30.  I was told that the only reason they even considered talking to me was because of my track record with Southwestern.  I was never asked about grades, even though I had done well, nor was I asked about extracurricular activities, such as being president of my fraternity.  All they wanted to know was why I sold books, what I did to be successful at it, and how I could apply what I had learned toward a career as a financial consultant."

"The principles it takes to be successful as a financial consultant , or any career for that matter, are the same principles that were engraved in me on the bookfield.  I have to sell myself to clients everyday, with trust as the core of my relationship."

Wayne Bost - Winstead Sechrest & Minick
Attorney | SW Summers 1978-1983
Auburn University & Baylor Law School

"First, as a trial lawyer, I am constantly explaining a particular point of view, a set of facts, a legal argument or the like, in an attempt to persuade the listener towards my client's position.  Lawyers call this 'advocacy'.  It is a form of 'selling'.  Nothing I had done before, and nothing I have done since, better equipped me to do this."

"Second, at that point in my life I greatly benefited from the lessons one only learns when faced with adversity, challenge, difficulty and uncertainty.  I learned the value of preparation and effort, determination and persistence, honesty and sacrifice.  Many times as a young lawyer I would say to myself before trial -- 'this is hard, and kind of scary, but the bookfield prepared me well.'  I cannot think of a better training ground."

"I am currently the head of the Litigation Section in our law firm, one of the largest business law firms in Texas, with more than 300 lawyers.  I have interviewed law students for close to 20 years at law schools all over the country.  A summer with Southwestern literally jumps off the page at me, as it does to anyone with knowledge of the experience."

Ami Ivers - Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP

University of Virginia

"It is expected that, after the second year of law school, students who want to go into private practice will be able to get jobs as summer associates in firms that may hire them on a permanent basis following graduation.  While these jobs are common for second year students at top law schools, they are difficult to get a s a first year student.  I have just finished my first year of law school, and I was hired as a summer associate at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius largely because of the experience I had at Southwestern."

"Four summers on the bookfield set me apart from other applicants, not only during the job search, but also in applying to law schools.  I was accepted at all but one of the top seven schools in the country that I applied to."

"My Southwestern experience also separated me from thousands of other applicants.  Most med school hopefuls do pretty much the same thing during their summer breaks, their GPAs are generally good, and if they want to get into a good program, they score high on their MCAT exams.  The problem?  Every resume looks the same--good MCAT's, good GPA, and the ever-present 'worked in a hospital' for summer work experience.  There's nothing wrong with getting summer experience in the medical field, but as competitive as it is getting in, you need to try to look different...not like everyone else.  My resume indeed looked vastly different from my fellow applicants."

I now run the most profitable walk-in clinic in Vanderbilt's array of health services.  I am selling all the time..."

Teresa Broers, PharmD - Redler's Professional Pharmacy
Pharmacist | SW Summers 1998-2000
University of Nebraska-Kearney & University of Nebraska Medical Center

Teresa currently owns Dunes Family Pharmacy in South Dakota. Click Here to Read More

"After graduating with my doctor of pharmacy degree at the age of 23, I became a pharmacist at Redler's Prefessinoal Pharmacy where my business skills and selling ability really became an asset.

"In pharmacy, we encounter all types of people.  We are not able to choose our patients."...  "It is important to connect with each of them in order to establish a relationship where they are able to trust you."

"I decided that if I wanted to be a good pharmacist I should stay and work in a pharmacy for the summer and gain practical experience, but if I wanted to be a great pharmacist I needed to challenge myself and do something that separated me for the other pharmacy students."

"Selling books is not the only way to grow during college, but I am convinced it is one of the best experiences a student can have and without a doubt it helped instill success principles in me that I use everyday.  As a missionary developing an orphanage in a third world country there are plenty of obstacles that force me to rely on my faith in God and the success principles I’ve learned.   Faith combined with a great work ethic is what will cause this orphanage to come to fruition and be a success."

"My faith, character, and boldness for the Lord grew every summer while working on my B.A. degree in Communications and after that pursuing my Missionary bush flying and maintenance training at Moody Bible Institutes - Moody Aviation.  Mission boards do no like indebted missionaries.  Much of my $80,000 education was paid for by the hard work I put in those summers working with Southwestern."
